Porsche Data Guide
996
(1997-2005) These
are the ‘new generation' water-cooled models that have taken Porsche
popularity on to a new level. The new Porsches will appeal to a far wider
audience, being easier to drive and having a far more modern style. While
the mainstream models are perfect everyday drivers, they trade off agility
and that fine edge of performance that is the trademark of the air-cooled
911s.

Comments
The 996 was launched in 1997 in rear-wheel drive Coupe form only with a
six-speed manual gearbox. The Tiptronic S automatic transmission was
optional. The Carrera 4 and Cabriolet followed for the 1999 model year.
Although quality improved all the way through the early years, there was a
major upgrade to the 3.6-litre ‘facelift’ cars for the 2002 model
year. This year also marked the introduction of the Targa. The Carrera 4S
and Turbo Cabriolets were launched in the 2004 model year.
The
new 997 model replaced the 996 for the start of the 2005 model year, but
the Turbo S and C4S continued in production into 2005.
