Comments:
Early ‘short wheelbase’
911s are an acquired taste for dedicated enthusiasts only. They drive
unlike any of the later 911s and could be described as having
‘knife-edge’ handling and a vintage car feel. The ‘S’ is the most
potent, although today its performance is fairly sedate. Corrosion is
the greatest enemy and original cars will have lived their lives in dry
climates. The historic rallying community has snapped up short wheelbase
911s and there are (sadly) very few original specification cars around
today.
Sportomatic transmission is a manual selection transmission, but with
no clutch pedal. It is not an automatic in the conventional sense.
Sportomatic typically adds about one second to the 0-62mph acceleration
time.
These early 911s are coveted
by enthusiasts, particularly the 2.2 and 2.4-litre models.
Prices for fair condition
examples will start at £10,000, but buyers will need extreme care. £20,000
will buy a good, 2.4-litre 911T and £25,000 a good 911E. Collectable mint
examples of the late model 911S will sell for up to £40,000 with concours
cars even higher.
The limited edition Carrera RS
is highly sought after and there are fakes in the marketplace. Prices for
good Touring (M472) examples start at £55-60,000 and have exceeded £125,000
for the M471 ‘Sport’ models.
Not
a segment of the market to enter without talking to the experts
beforehand!
